This is a complicated love story. The people are portrayed in polar oposite colours, she in white and gold, he in black with touches of ice blue. Her colours are vibrant and alive, golden and flesh tones, suggesting that she is the one who has presented the flower, a living gift. Her expression is serene, even trusting, but the intelligence in her face says that she does not trust blindly. She knows him. His expression on the other hand is that of a furrowed brow. The gesture, the gift and what it means, concerns him. And yet the positioning of his hand over hers suggests that he very much wants this connection. His colours are grey, suggesting that he comes from a world very different than hers. The skin of his hand is dark, almost black, with a hint of the skeletal traced on it. If she is all about life, perhaps he is all about death. A warrior, maybe? The armour-like clothing is consistent with this idea, and consistent too with who he is as a personrotected, invulnerable. She, however, has only minimal attire; she is very vulnerable, at least in body. Yet she is the one at peace and the armoured warrior is worried. Perhaps he fears to taint her with his world of shadow. The downward tilt of his head and focus of his gaze on the flower and her hand says that the gesture has moved him deeply, but the furrowed brow says he is unsure how to respond. His hand over hers suggests he does not wish to let her go, however. The contrast of colours and the powerful facial expressions are effective in communicating the story of the moment. The blue around his throat, while visually appealing, also hints at the coldness of his world, a coldness that may well be threatening to choke him. THe title of the piece "revelation" suggests that this may be the moment she has first shown her feelings to him, that it is a new thing. She is confident in it, but he is perplexed. THe question hangs in the air over this image: will he overcome his worries and respond favourably, or not? A touching and fascinating piece. I would love to know the outcome of this moment.
